Hello! Welcome to Shy Coyote Farm!

July 31, 2023

Today is the final day of our summer break. Tomorrow is August and that means prepping everything for the fall! We will be building beds, building irrigation, transplanting things like tomatoes, pepper, eggplants and squash, and seeding dozens of trays for our fall crops. After being lazy the last few weeks it is daunting to get back to the back breaking work it takes to run even a small farm in this HEAT. We can really only be outside for a few hours every day before the heat becomes dangerous. I don’t know how the plants do it! They are so resilient. With our new DIY hoop house and more cooler storage space this year, brand new functional irrigation and several new beds to plant into I am very excited to see what we can do!

Well, it has been MONTHS since I late updated this. That just goes to show you how busy we can get with the farm. Its been a rough time down here in South Texas. The weather is so unpredictable a lot of the time! We will get freezing temperatures one day and 50mph winds the next, temps in the 90s with high humidity, sometimes all in the time span of a few weeks. This is one of the most challenging things about growing down here. You never know what to plan for in advance so it is easy to loose months worth of work in just a few hours with a wild weather event. Farmers must stay vigilant, always be focusing on that farm, never letting a single day go by without being there for the crops.

We have also been having a really successful second spring so far! We only started doing this ourselves in October of 2022, so this is our second time around for growing spring crops like carrots and lettuce, as well has starting our summer crops journey. Today We will be trellising our tomato plants, which are about 1 to 2 feet tall now. I predict we will have tomatoes in about 6 weeks!
